India’s accelerating transition towards clean energy has received strong international recognition, with UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell describing the country’s renewable energy expansion as a powerful response to global energy transition challenges. During his visit to India, Stiell highlighted the country’s remarkable progress in renewable energy deployment, electrification programmes, and sustainable infrastructure development.

Stiell noted that India’s rapid rollout of solar and wind power demonstrates how developing economies can simultaneously pursue economic growth, energy security, and climate action. He emphasized that investing in clean energy is not only essential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also for creating jobs, strengthening industries, and improving long-term energy resilience.

India has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets, supported by large-scale investments in utility-scale solar parks, wind farms, transmission infrastructure, battery energy storage systems (BESS), green hydrogen, and smart grid technologies. These initiatives have significantly expanded the country’s non-fossil fuel electricity capacity while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

The UN Climate Chief also pointed to India’s electrification initiatives and renewable energy programmes as examples of how clean energy investments can deliver broader socio-economic benefits. Expanding access to affordable and reliable electricity, improving industrial competitiveness, and strengthening domestic manufacturing are increasingly being driven by renewable energy deployment across the country.

India has committed to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity by 2030 and reaching net-zero emissions by 2070. To support these goals, the government continues to promote renewable energy generation, transmission expansion, battery storage, green hydrogen production, and clean mobility initiatives. These measures are expected to improve grid reliability while supporting the country’s growing electricity demand.

Stiell’s remarks come at a time when countries around the world are seeking practical pathways to balance energy security with climate commitments. By scaling renewable energy alongside investments in modern power infrastructure, India is increasingly being viewed as an important contributor to the global clean energy transition.
