Renewables Now Contribute 26.2% of India’s Total Power Generation in FY26

News Date April 1, 2026

India has reached a significant milestone in its journey toward a cleaner energy future, with renewable energy sources accounting for 26.2% of the country’s total electricity generation during the first 11 months of the 2025-26 financial year (FY26). This figure represents a steady climb in the share of “green” power within the national grid, highlighting the success of aggressive capacity additions in the solar and wind sectors. As the country works toward its 2030 climate commitments, this 26.2% contribution serves as a strong indicator that renewables are no longer just a “supplementary” source but a core pillar of India’s energy security. The data shows that while coal remains the dominant source for baseload power, the growth rate of renewable generation is outperforming traditional thermal sources. Solar energy, in particular, has been the primary engine of this growth, supported by large-scale utility projects and a massive push for rooftop solarization under the PM Surya Ghar initiative. Wind energy has also maintained a consistent performance, with new hybrid projects—combining solar and wind at the same site—helping to provide a more stable and “firm” flow of power to the grid during non-peak solar hours.

However, as the share of renewables crosses the quarter-mark of total generation, the focus for 2026 is shifting toward Grid Integration and Storage. Managing a grid where more than one-fourth of the power comes from intermittent sources requires sophisticated forecasting and large-scale battery backup systems. The government and private developers are now prioritizing “Round-the-Clock” (RTC) renewable projects to ensure that this 26.2% share continues to grow without compromising the stability of the national electricity network. For the Indian energy sector, the goal is clear: turning this percentage into a majority share through innovation and infrastructure investment.
