Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has called on state governments, communities and ordinary citizens to join a nationwide effort to improve energy efficiency and expand the use of renewable power to fight climate change and support sustainable growth. Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad, he said that large-scale public involvement is essential for success and highlighted India’s progress in reducing emissions and energy use while promoting responsible everyday habits.

Mr. Khattar, who is the Union Minister for Energy, Housing and Urban Development, stressed that tackling environmental problems such as rising greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution needs action at the grassroots level. He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long-standing warnings about climate risks and reiterated that India has become a global voice for sustainable development.

The minister emphasized the importance of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), a national campaign that encourages simple changes like switching to LED lights, using public transport or carpooling, adopting electric or cleaner fuel vehicles, expanding solar installations, conserving water and reducing waste. He said these measures help reduce energy demand and protect the environment.

According to data from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, India saved about 53.60 million tonnes of oil equivalent in energy during 2023–24, including electricity savings of 321 billion units. These efforts also resulted in annual savings worth roughly ₹2 lakh crore and cut CO₂ emissions by 321 million tonnes, the minister noted, saying these results support the country’s clean energy transition and the goal of a developed India by 2047. Khattar proposed holding Mission LiFE summits at state, national and global levels to strengthen India’s leadership, attract investment and boost local economies. He praised the role of states like Telangana for their sustainability initiatives and mentioned the government’s new ADEETIE scheme, which provides ₹1,000 crore to help small and medium enterprises cut energy use by 30-50 per cent.

The minister also highlighted efforts to promote energy conservation among students through the establishment of Energy Clubs and commended the Bureau of Energy Efficiency for organizing the National Energy Conservation Awards 2025, acknowledging the contributions of industries, institutions and citizens to the country’s environmental goals.
