India Says Clean Energy Growth Is Creating Jobs and Boosting Industry

News Date January 23, 2026

India’s transition to cleaner power is helping create new jobs, support manufacturing growth and make Indian industries more competitive globally, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026 in Davos, Switzerland. Speaking at a high-level session on energy funding, Mr Joshi highlighted the country’s progress in building renewable capacity and lowering electricity costs, noting that these changes are benefiting households, businesses and rural communities.

Mr Joshi said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has turned its shift to clean power into a broad development effort that strengthens energy security while making electricity more affordable for people and industry alike. He reported that the nation has reached about 267 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity, with renewable sources such as solar and wind making up roughly 52 % of all installed power. Initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and PM-KUSUM scheme are enabling households and farmers to generate their own clean energy and increase income.

The minister emphasised that the falling cost of renewable power is contributing to lower electricity tariffs for both homes and industry, helping lower living costs and support business growth. He pointed to rapid expansion in India’s domestic manufacturing of clean energy equipment — including solar modules, storage systems and wind power components — as a major source of employment opportunities across the country.

On the sidelines of the forum, Mr Joshi held bilateral talks with global ministers and business leaders to attract further investment, deepen technology cooperation and build international partnerships that support India’s clean energy goals.

His remarks underscore India’s effort to position its energy transition not only as an environmental initiative but as a driver of economic growth, jobs and global competitiveness.
