India’s NGEL and Assago Join Hands to Make Green Urea Using Renewable Energy
February 4, 2026
NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of India’s largest power utility NTPC Ltd, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Assago Industries Private Limited to supply key clean inputs for a new green urea production facility planned in Andhra Pradesh. The agreement focuses on using green ammonia, captured carbon dioxide and renewable power to produce environmentally better fertiliser at scale.
Under the pact sealed on February 2, 2026 in New Delhi, NGEL will provide green ammonia, CO₂, renewable electricity and other utilities to support a plant capable of producing about 1,000 tonnes of green urea per day. The facility is expected to be set up at the NGEL Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, near Visakhapatnam, turning sunshine and wind-powered hydrogen into low-carbon fertiliser feedstock.
The collaboration aims to reduce India’s reliance on imported urea and cut the carbon footprint of fertiliser manufacturing, which traditionally depends on fossil fuels. By using renewable hydrogen derivatives like green ammonia together with captured CO₂, the project supports the nation’s transition to sustainable chemical production and aligns with broader clean energy goals.
Officials from NGEL, NTPC and Assago attended the signing, highlighting the shared commitment to boosting green industrial value chains in the agricultural and energy sectors. The initiative is also seen as a model for future partnerships that integrate renewable power with advanced manufacturing processes to deliver low-emission products.
