India’s total power generation capacity is expected to more than double to about 1,121 gigawatts (GW) by 2035–36, according to a midterm review of the Central Electricity Authority’s 20th Electric Power Survey. The report highlights that rising electricity demand and rapid expansion of renewable energy, especially solar power, will drive this significant growth in the country’s power sector.

At present, India’s installed power capacity is slightly above 500 GW, and the projected increase reflects the country’s fast economic growth and increasing energy needs. The report indicates that solar energy will play a leading role in this expansion, contributing a major share of the new capacity additions over the next decade. Renewable energy sources are expected to dominate future growth as India works to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and move toward cleaner energy systems.

The survey also suggests that electricity demand will continue to rise steadily due to industrial growth, urbanisation, and higher use of electric appliances. To meet this demand, the country will need not only more generation capacity but also stronger transmission and distribution infrastructure. Expanding the power grid and improving efficiency will be essential to support the growing share of renewable energy.

Solar energy is expected to lead the transition because of its falling costs, large-scale deployment, and strong policy support. Wind, hydro, and other renewable sources will also contribute, but solar is likely to remain the main driver of capacity growth.

Overall, the findings show that India is moving toward a major transformation in its power sector, with a clear shift toward clean energy while preparing to meet rapidly increasing electricity demand in the coming years.
