Solar Panels Installed in Security Force Buildings Across India

The Ministry of Home Affairs has started installing rooftop solar panels across buildings of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to promote clean energy use in government infrastructure. The initiative, announced in Parliament, aims to generate up to about 71.68 megawatts of solar power and reduce dependence on conventional electricity in security establishments across the country.

The solar systems have been installed at multiple locations operated by different security forces. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has the highest installed capacity with over 16,000 kilowatts across 42 locations, followed by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Border Security Force (BSF). Other forces such as the Assam Rifles, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), National Security Guard (NSG), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) have also adopted rooftop solar systems at several of their facilities.

These projects are part of a wider plan by the ministry to expand the use of renewable energy in government operations. Along with grid-connected rooftop solar systems, the ministry is also promoting off-grid solar solutions, biogas plants, fuel cells, solar water heaters, and solar street lighting across its establishments.

Officials said the initiative will help lower carbon emissions and reduce electricity costs while ensuring reliable power supply in remote and sensitive locations where many CAPF units are based. The move also supports India’s broader goal of increasing the use of renewable energy in public infrastructure.

The deployment of solar systems across security forces reflects the government’s growing focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, especially in large institutions that consume significant amounts of power on a daily basis.
