NTPC Adds 165 MW Solar Power at Gujarat Project
March 21, 2026
State-owned power producer NTPC has added 165 megawatts (MW) of solar power capacity at its Khavda-II project in Gujarat, further expanding its renewable energy portfolio. The new capacity has been declared commercially operational from February 20, 2026, marking another phase in the development of one of India’s large solar projects.
The newly commissioned capacity is part of the 1,200 MW Khavda-II Solar PV project, which is being developed in stages by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, a subsidiary of NTPC Green Energy. The phased execution allows the company to gradually bring sections of the project online while continuing construction on the remaining capacity.
With the addition of this 165 MW, the total installed capacity of the NTPC Green Energy group has increased to around 8,992 MW, reflecting steady growth in its clean energy operations. The project forms part of a broader strategy to scale up renewable energy generation and strengthen India’s transition toward sustainable power sources.
The Khavda solar development is located within a larger renewable energy zone in Gujarat, which is being developed as one of the biggest clean energy hubs in the country. Large-scale projects like this are designed to generate significant amounts of electricity while supporting grid stability through phased commissioning.
Earlier, NTPC had already commissioned other portions of the same project, including an initial 210 MW phase, indicating steady progress toward the full planned capacity.
The latest addition highlights NTPC’s continued focus on expanding its renewable energy footprint. Officials say such projects are important for increasing solar power generation, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and meeting India’s long-term clean energy targets.
