Ahmedabad – Powertrac Group, a renewable energy solutions provider, has announced a ₹6 billion (~$66 million) investment to establish a 1,000 MWh per year battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing facility aimed at strengthening India’s clean energy infrastructure and supporting grid-scale storage needs. The facility will produce modular containerized BESS units and lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack assemblies, company executives said.
The new plant will be capable of manufacturing BESS units ranging from 1 MWh to 5 MWh, integrating in-house battery management systems and contributing to hybrid solar plus storage solutions. The move reflects Powertrac’s broader goal of achieving 1,000 MW of operational independent power producer (IPP) projects by 2030, as energy storage becomes increasingly critical for managing variable renewable power supply.
Industry observers note that battery energy storage is transitioning from a peripheral role to an essential part of India’s clean energy transition, handling fluctuating power supply and enhancing grid reliability. Recent policy incentives such as the Basic Customs Duty exemption on capital goods for lithium-ion cell manufacturing — announced in Union Budget 2026 — are expected to reduce capital costs for BESS deployments and encourage further investment in local production capacity.
While battery storage additions in India have seen short-term declines, manufacturing investments like Powertrac’s facility are seen as key to expanding capacity and lowering reliance on imports, especially in grid-scale storage solutions linked with solar and wind power projects.
