Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 72.5 MW captive solar power project at Kalasar in Bikaner, Rajasthan, to supply renewable electricity for Tata Steel.

The project represents another step in the growing adoption of renewable energy by India’s energy-intensive industries. Through the captive solar project, Tata Steel is expected to receive clean electricity to support its broader decarbonisation and sustainability objectives.

According to Tata Power, the solar facility is expected to generate approximately 166 million units of green electricity annually and offset around 118,856 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. The project uses 171,360 solar modules manufactured by TP Solar Limited, connecting renewable power generation with domestic solar manufacturing capabilities.

The project has been developed through TP Vardhman Surya Limited, a subsidiary of TPREL, and highlights the increasing role of captive renewable-energy projects in helping industrial consumers secure cleaner sources of electricity.

For industries with significant and long-term power requirements, captive and group-captive renewable projects can become an important part of their energy strategy. They allow businesses to align electricity procurement with sustainability goals while building a more diversified and potentially predictable energy portfolio.

The Tata Steel project also reflects a broader transformation underway in India’s industrial energy landscape. Renewable energy is increasingly moving beyond standalone solar installations and becoming integrated into corporate decarbonisation strategies across sectors such as steel, manufacturing, technology, petrochemicals and other energy-intensive industries.

With this commissioning, TPREL said its total renewable utility capacity has reached 12.3 GW, including around 7 GW of operational capacity and approximately 5.3 GW under various stages of implementation.

As Indian industries continue their transition toward lower-carbon operations, projects like this demonstrate how large-scale captive solar can play a growing role in connecting clean-energy generation directly with industrial demand.
