Maximizing Savings in MP: How Battery Storage and Wind-Solar Hybrids are Transforming Industrial Power

Commercial and Industrial (C&I) consumers in Madhya Pradesh are finding that “one size fits all” no longer applies to renewable energy. At the recent C&I Clean Energy Meet in Bhopal, experts highlighted that the state now offers a sophisticated menu of options—ranging from rooftop solar and open access to advanced wind-solar hybrid models—each designed to solve specific load profiles and capital constraints.

For businesses with high nighttime demand or those looking to replace expensive diesel generators, battery energy storage is emerging as a high-value strategy. While storage is currently less viable for general heavy industry due to high battery costs, it has become a “no-brainer” for commercial sectors like hospitality. Hotels in MP, often paying grid tariffs of ₹15/kWh or more, can use batteries to store cheap daytime solar and use it at night, effectively cutting their power costs by 50%. Similarly, replacing diesel power (which can cost up to ₹30/kWh) with battery storage can lower the cost to just ₹11–₹12/kWh.

The state is also seeing a shift toward wind-solar hybrid projects to overcome “contract demand” limitations. While standalone solar open access can typically meet only about 30% of a company’s power needs in MP, a hybrid model can push that share up to 60%. This is particularly vital for export-oriented industries like cement, which now face increasing pressure from global supply chains to source at least 40% of their energy from green sources. Whether it’s a small enterprise opting for a quick-payback rooftop CAPEX model or a major industrialist leveraging group captive open access for long-term tariff visibility, Madhya Pradesh has laid out a clear roadmap for businesses to decouple their growth from rising fossil fuel costs.
