The Ministry of Power has announced that India successfully met its all-time highest peak power demand of 256.1 GW on April 24, 2026, without experiencing any energy shortages. Despite a punishing early-season heatwave that sent temperatures soaring across Northern and Western India, the national grid remained stable. This feat was made possible by a combination of high thermal availability and a massive contribution from solar energy, which hit a generation peak of over 81 GW during the day. 

The smooth management of this record load is a testament to the “advance action” plan initiated by the government earlier this year. To prevent the blackouts that characterized previous summer peaks, the Ministry mandated that all imported coal-based plants run at full capacity and deferred planned maintenance of thermal units to the monsoon season. Additionally, the strategic integration of Section 11 of the Electricity Act ensured that the entire available fleet was operational to handle the 10.4% year-on-year growth in power demand.

While thermal power provided the steady 172 GW baseload, the “hero” of the afternoon was the solar sector, which satisfied nearly 32% of the total generation during the high-pressure period. Officials noted that while the afternoon peak was handled comfortably, the upcoming challenge remains the “evening peak”—the period just after sunset when solar output drops but air conditioning demand stays high. To counter this, the government is accelerating the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and pumped hydro projects to ensure that India’s record-breaking summer remains “shortage-free.”
