Telangana Sets Ambitious Clean Energy Targets, Eyes Global Manufacturing Hub

Telangana is positioning itself for a major expansion of renewable energy, with the state government targeting 20,000 MW of solar capacity by 2030 and more than 26,000 MW by 2035.
Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka outlined the vision while inaugurating the two-day India Energy Summit and Expo in Hyderabad. He said the government’s objective is to transform Telangana into a clean-energy hub, not simply a consumer of renewable electricity.
Energy storage is expected to play an increasingly important role in Telangana’s renewable-energy expansion. The state is encouraging both battery energy storage and pumped-storage projects, with a target of around 3,800 MW of storage by 2030 and 8,000 MW by 2035.
The emphasis on storage reflects the growing need to balance variable renewable generation with demand for reliable electricity.
Telangana’s rapidly developing technology ecosystem is also creating new demand for reliable, clean electricity.
The government is planning a dedicated 100 MW renewable-energy plant to support an AI data centre proposed for Bharat Future City on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
This highlights a growing connection between renewable energy and India’s expanding data-centre and AI infrastructure.
The state’s clean-energy ambitions extend beyond solar and storage.
Telangana has set a target of producing approximately 400,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. It also plans to expand its EV-charging infrastructure, with a target of 12,000 charging stations by 2035.
One of the most significant aspects of the announcement is the ambition to develop Telangana as a manufacturing hub for clean-energy technologies.
The state is encouraging investment in areas including solar and wind equipment, batteries, power electronics and EV charging systems. Companies investing in these areas are expected to receive various forms of government support, including capital assistance, SGST reimbursement, electricity-duty benefits and fast-track approvals.
For renewable-energy developers, manufacturers and commercial and industrial consumers, Telangana’s plans could create opportunities across several segments:

Telangana’s next phase of growth may therefore be defined not simply by how much clean electricity it generates, but by how effectively it builds an ecosystem around that electricity — from manufacturing and storage to green hydrogen, digital infrastructure and industrial consumption.
