Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) is expanding its renewable-energy footprint through a diversified portfolio of solar, agri-solar and floating solar projects across India.

The company’s renewable-energy initiatives reflect a broader shift in how major energy companies are approaching the clean-energy transition. Rather than relying on a single renewable-energy model, HPCL is exploring multiple ways to generate clean electricity while making better use of land, water and existing infrastructure.

According to the latest update, HPCL has an operational renewable-energy portfolio of 253 MW, comprising solar and wind assets. Through its renewable-energy subsidiary, HPCL Renewable and Green Energy Limited (HPRGE), the company is also executing more than 200 MWp of solar projects across different formats.

HPCL’s renewable-energy strategy includes ground-mounted solar projects, rooftop solar installations, agri-solar systems and floating solar projects.

This diversified approach allows renewable-energy generation to be integrated into different types of infrastructure and locations.

The company has commissioned ground-mounted solar projects in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh to supply renewable power to its marketing locations. Additional ground-mounted projects in Gujarat and Haryana have also progressed towards completion.

HPCL is also developing a 140 MWp solar project at Galiveedu in Andhra Pradesh, which forms part of its broader effort to increase renewable-power consumption across its refineries, terminals and marketing operations.

One of the most interesting elements of HPCL’s renewable-energy portfolio is its agri-solar initiative.

The company’s agri-solar project in Delhi supplies renewable electricity to HPCL retail outlets under the Group Net Metering policy.

The solar modules are installed on elevated structures with sufficient ground clearance to allow agricultural activities to continue below the panels.

This model demonstrates how solar power and agriculture can potentially coexist on the same land.

As land availability becomes an increasingly important consideration for renewable-energy development, agri-solar projects could offer an opportunity to combine electricity generation with agricultural activity.

Instead of choosing between farmland and solar infrastructure, carefully designed agri-solar projects can potentially support both.

HPCL is also expanding into floating solar.

The company has commissioned a floating solar project at the reservoir of its Vizag refinery and is developing additional floating solar projects at the Pachpadra and Nachna reservoirs associated with HPCL’s Rajasthan operations.

The Nachna project is also being integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System, highlighting the growing connection between renewable-energy generation and energy storage.

Floating solar offers a different approach to renewable-energy deployment by using available water surfaces rather than requiring additional land.

In suitable locations, floating solar can help utilise reservoirs and other water bodies for electricity generation. It may also contribute to reducing water evaporation from reservoirs.

HPCL’s portfolio highlights an important trend in India’s renewable-energy transition.

The future of solar is not limited to large utility-scale projects.

Renewable-energy deployment is increasingly taking place across multiple environments:
