News Date September 9, 2025

India has added solar open-access capacity to a total of 24.6 gigawatts by the end of June 2025, adding about 3.8 gigawatts of capacity in the first half of the year, according to industry data, latest available. Adding capacity was slightly lower this year than it was in 2024 amid strong demand for renewables. The first half of 2025 also saw restricted growth because of factors like the time taken for approval of connectivity to the grid and lack of facilities for evacuation of transmission to the grid. However, there was strong recovery in the second quarter as the players hurried to commission their projects to get benefits of incentives and waivers.

Maharashtra has emerged as a leading performer in terms of quarterly additions, with more than 30% of overall additions for the April to June period. Karnataka has again occupied the top slot in terms of the total open-access presence in the country, constituting close to a fourth of the total cumulative installations in the country.

The remaining share was contributed by Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Karnataka together, which comprised a major chunk of the total installations. It is noted that though the open-access model is still garnering much interest from commercial and industrial customers looking for competitive green energy solutions, the future growth of the market will largely depend on the ability to overcome logistics and policy hurdles.
