India Adds Record 44.5 GW of Clean Energy in 2025

News Date December 30, 2025

India achieved its highest-ever growth in renewable energy capacity in 2025, adding 44.5 gigawatts (GW) of new clean power to the national grid up to November, government data shows, nearly doubling the additions from the same period last year.

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), this historic increase has pushed the country’s total installed renewable energy capacity to around 254 GW, marking more than 23 % growth compared with November 2024. Solar power accounted for the largest share of the expansion, supported by strong installations across sectors, while wind energy also made significant gains. The addition of 44.5 GW in 2025 is the highest annual figure on record for India’s clean energy sector and reflects a major step forward in reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Solar capacity grew by nearly 35 GW this year, bringing total solar capacity to about 132.85 GW, a rise of more than 41 % over last year. Wind energy added almost 5.8 GW, raising its installed base to nearly 54 GW.

Officials also highlighted progress in rooftop solar, with over 25 lakh households adopting rooftop systems under government schemes. Combined with other non-fossil fuel sources such as large hydro and nuclear, India’s non-fossil energy capacity now accounts for over half of the total installed electricity capacity, reaching about 262.74 GW. The record expansion this year strengthens India’s drive toward its long-term climate and sustainability goals, including reducing carbon emissions and meeting ambitious renewable capacity targets by 2030, while also helping lower energy costs and improve energy security.
