Bihar Builds India’s Biggest Solar-Powered Battery System to Keep Electricity Stable

News Date January 7, 2026

Bihar has developed what officials say is India’s largest battery energy storage installation linked with solar power, aimed at making electricity supply more reliable and stabilizing the state’s power grid. The project is located in Kajra village in Lakhisarai district and combines large solar power generation with advanced battery storage technology.

The integrated system will store excess electricity generated from solar panels during the day and release it during peak demand hours, helping smooth out fluctuations in supply and reduce pressure on the grid. The full project will ultimately have a battery capacity of about 495 megawatt-hours alongside solar plants generating roughly 301 megawatts of clean energy, making it the biggest such facility commissioned in the country so far.

The first phase, already commissioned, includes 185 MW of solar capacity paired with around 254 MWh of battery storage and has been connected to the regional grid with the necessary transmission infrastructure in place. A second phase under development will add more solar and storage capacity, expected to be complete by early 2027. State energy officials say this combined solar-plus-storage model will boost power reliability for homes, businesses and industry, cut down on outages during high demand, and support Bihar’s shift to cleaner energy sources.
