Power Grid Secures Key Transmission Project to Carry 3 GW of Green Power in Karnataka
January 9, 2026
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has been chosen as the winning bidder for a major transmission project in Karnataka that will help carry up to 3 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy into the grid, the company said in a filing to the National Stock Exchange and BSE on January 8, 2026. The project will link energy-rich areas in Davanagere and Bellary with the national network, strengthening India’s clean energy infrastructure.
Under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model, POWERGRID will construct a new 400 kV double-circuit high-voltage line in Karnataka. The scheme includes adding line bays and upgrading existing pooling stations at Davanagere and Bellary to handle increased power flows. Interconnecting transformers and other equipment will be installed to ensure reliable movement of renewable power from generation points to demand centers while maintaining grid stability.
The 3 GW capacity comprises about 250 megawatts (MW) at Davanagere and 2.75 GW at Bellary, reflecting strong renewable potential in these zones. The award follows a tariff-based competitive bidding process, and the official Letter of Intent was issued on January 7, 2026. Once completed, the transmission link will play a significant part in boosting clean energy delivery in southern India.
According to regulatory disclosures, the project will help integrate large-scale wind, solar, and hybrid generation into the grid, aligning with national goals to expand renewable energy capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The development also underlines POWERGRID’s expanding role in strengthening India’s transmission backbone to support the country’s energy transition.
