India Wants Strong Budget Support for Renewable Energy Growth

News Date January 24, 2026

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is urging the government to provide lasting financial and policy backing for clean energy initiatives in the upcoming Union Budget 2026, officials said, as India moves to expand solar, wind and other renewable sources while boosting domestic manufacturing and future technologies. MNRE Secretary Santosh Sarangi outlined key priorities ahead of the budget announcement scheduled for February 1, 2026.

The ministry is pushing for continued funding of major programmes like PM Kusum and PM Surya Ghar, which have helped spread decentralised renewable energy, especially in rural areas, and ease the burden of agricultural power subsidies on states. Under PM Kusum, several states have issued large-scale tenders, and rooftop solar adoption is expected to add significant capacity under the Surya Ghar model.

Officials also highlighted the need for budgetary incentives to strengthen India’s role in renewable component manufacturing. The country has become one of the world’s largest solar module producers, and there is growing demand for support in manufacturing upstream products such as solar cells, ingots and wafers. The ministry is also seeking backing for emerging sectors like polysilicon and floating solar as part of efforts to build a globally competitive clean energy ecosystem.

MNRE’s requests reflect broader industry hopes that Budget 2026 will encourage investment in distributed renewable systems, domestic production, research and development, and new technologies that can help India reach its ambitious clean energy targets.
