India and EU Agree to Work Together on Clean Energy and Cutting Pollution
January 28, 2026
India and the European Union have issued a joint statement outlining a strong shared focus on environmental protection and reducing carbon emissions, reinforcing their growing partnership in sustainable development. The statement, issued on January 28, 2026, in New Delhi, highlights cooperation on clean energy, climate action, and green technology, and signals both sides’ intent to strengthen economic and strategic ties in these areas.
The leaders of India and the EU said they will work together to support India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme and the EU’s Emissions Trading System, promote sustainable finance, and boost city-to-city cooperation on smart urbanisation. They also plan to revive environmental forums, enhance water cooperation, and promote sustainable agriculture systems.
A significant part of the agreement focuses on expanding clean energy projects and technology partnerships. This includes efforts to strengthen the India-EU Clean Energy and Climate Partnership, improve energy storage and smart grids, and reactivate the Joint Working Group on Energy Security to diversify energy sources in India.
Both sides agreed to hold an India-EU Wind Business Summit in 2026 to support wind energy technology and financing, and to set up a task force on green hydrogen to help decarbonise hard-to-abate industrial sectors. The EU has also committed significant funding through the European Investment Bank for climate-resilient infrastructure in India.
The statement acknowledges the importance of resilient and sustainable supply chains and highlights plans for broader cooperation on clean mobility, including sustainable aviation fuels and electric vehicle charging standards. While the document does not directly address the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, it emphasizes long-term collaboration on environmental and clean-technology initiatives to support economic growth and job creation
