News Date January 28, 2026

India and Canada have signed a joint statement to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector during India Energy Week 2026 in Goa, agreeing to expand collaboration on both traditional fuels and cleaner energy solutions. Officials from both nations finalised this agreement on January 27, 2026, in the presence of senior ministers, marking a step forward in bilateral energy relations and commitment to shared goals of energy security and diversified supplies.

The joint statement was signed after talks between India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, and Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Timothy Hodgson, and also marked the relaunch of the India–Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue, which had been paused previously. Both sides said strengthening energy ties was important for economic growth and stable energy access.

India and Canada acknowledged their energy sectors complement each other, with Canada working to expand exports of liquefied natural gas (LNG), crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to international markets, including Asia, and India being one of the world’s largest consumers and importers of oil and gas. As part of the agreement, both countries pledged to deepen bilateral energy trade, including increased Canadian supplies of LNG, LPG and crude oil to India and greater exports of refined petroleum products from India to Canada.

The statement also highlighted the importance of boosting joint commercial and investment cooperation in the energy sector. Canada has accelerated approvals for major energy projects, while India has outlined broad investment opportunities across its energy industry. Both sides said they will work to enhance long-term business partnerships and investor engagement.

In addition to conventional energy trade, the two nations agreed to cooperate on cleaner energy technologies and climate goals, including efforts to reduce emissions in traditional energy systems and explore collaboration in renewables, hydrogen, biofuels, sustainable aviation fuels, battery storage, critical minerals and other clean tech areas. They also expressed commitment to ongoing government-to-government and expert-level dialogue to support these objectives.
