India Greatly Increases Solar Panel Production Capacity

News Date March 19, 2026

India made a major jump in solar manufacturing in 2025 by adding a large amount of new production capacity for solar panels and cells, according to a recent industry report. The expansion shows the country’s strong push to become more self-reliant in clean energy and reduce dependence on imports while supporting its growing renewable energy needs.

During the year, India added about 119 gigawatts (GW) of solar module manufacturing capacity along with more than 9 GW of solar cell capacity. This sharp rise has taken the country’s total solar module manufacturing capacity to around 210 GW, while cell manufacturing capacity reached nearly 27 GW by the end of 2025.

Experts say the growth was driven by strong demand from large solar power projects, government programs, and rising rooftop solar adoption. Policies such as domestic manufacturing requirements and approved supplier lists also encouraged companies to expand production within the country.

The increase in manufacturing capacity reflects India’s broader plan to strengthen its solar supply chain. States like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu have emerged as key hubs for solar module production, while other regions are also expanding their capabilities.

At the same time, industry observers note that while manufacturing capacity is rising quickly, demand and supply must stay balanced. Future growth in domestic solar installations and exports will play an important role in using this expanded capacity effectively.

Overall, the significant rise in solar manufacturing highlights India’s fast progress in building a strong renewable energy sector and moving closer to its long-term clean energy targets.
