Cairn Oil & Gas Partners with Serentica Renewables to Source 25 MW of Hybrid Clean Energy
April 3, 2026
In a landmark move for India’s upstream energy sector, Cairn Oil & Gas (a Vedanta Group company) has officially begun sourcing 25 MW of captive renewable hybrid power for its operations in Barmer, Rajasthan. Through a long-term Power Delivery Agreement with Serentica Renewables, the partnership will see a blend of solar and wind energy meet approximately 20% of the total power requirements of the Mangala facility—India’s largest onshore oil-producing asset. This initiative marks a significant step in the “greening” of conventional energy operations, proving that even the most energy-intensive hydrocarbon assets can successfully integrate low-carbon solutions.
The power is being generated at Serentica’s specialized facility in Karnataka and delivered to the Rajasthan site with an impressive 70% Capacity Utilisation Factor (CUF). This ensures a consistent and dependable flow of roughly 153 million units of renewable power annually. For Cairn, the environmental impact is substantial: the shift is expected to reduce emissions by approximately 115 kilotonnes of CO₂e per year, a feat comparable to planting more than 5.7 million trees. Beyond the environmental benefits, the deal also ensures that Cairn remains ahead of its statutory Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) requirements.
This partnership is part of Cairn’s broader strategic roadmap to achieve Net Zero Carbon and supply 50% of India’s domestic oil and gas production with a significantly smaller environmental footprint. By embedding sustainability directly into its core upstream operations, Cairn is setting a new industry standard for how traditional energy giants can collaborate with renewable energy specialists. As India navigates its complex energy transition, this project serves as a practical blueprint for balancing the need for domestic energy security with the urgent demand for decarbonization.
