Bengaluru’s New Clean-Tech Corridor: Karnataka-Australia Pact to Boost Green Startups
April 4, 2026
Karnataka is reinforcing its status as India’s “Innovation Capital” by shifting its focus toward the next frontier of technology: Renewable Energy. In a major international collaboration, the State Energy Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, alongside premier local institutions like IIM-Bengaluru (NSRCEL) and IISc (FSID). The goal of this three-year partnership is to nurture 20 clean energy startups annually, providing them with a direct pathway from research and incubation to global commercialization.
The initiative, facilitated by the Australia India Business Council (AIBC), focuses on high-impact domains including energy storage, green fuels, solar, and wind technologies. Under the agreement, the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Corp Ltd (KREDL) will establish a dedicated incubation and technology innovation center in Bengaluru. While KREDL provides the necessary local infrastructure and funding, UNSW—through its renowned Founders Program—will offer technical mentorship, capacity building, and invaluable access to global research and innovation networks.
For the selected startups, the partnership offers more than just a workspace; it provides a bridge to international markets. High-potential ventures will receive advanced incubation and exposure to Australian expertise, helping them scale their solutions to address global climate challenges. As Energy Minister KJ George noted, this collaboration is about creating a “global ecosystem” that benefits the government, businesses, and citizens alike. By combining Australian scientific rigor with Bengaluru’s entrepreneurial energy, Karnataka is positioning itself as a central hub for the sustainable technologies that will power the world’s transition to Net Zero.
