NTPC Green Energy Crosses 10 GW Milestone in Renewable Capacity
April 4, 2026
India’s state-owned power giant has reached a defining moment in its transition from fossil fuels to clean energy. NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), the renewable energy arm of the country’s largest power utility, has officially surpassed the 10 GW operational capacity milestone. This achievement solidifies its position as a dominant force in India’s green energy landscape and marks a significant leap toward its ambitious long-term goal of reaching 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032.
The journey to 10 GW has been accelerated by a series of massive utility-scale projects across India’s solar-rich states. A major portion of this capacity comes from expansive solar parks in Rajasthan and Gujarat, where NTPC has leveraged its decades of experience in large-scale infrastructure to deploy high-efficiency PV modules at a rapid pace. This milestone isn’t just about the numbers; it represents a fundamental shift in the national grid, where state-backed “baseload” providers are now successfully pivoting to become the primary architects of a decarbonized power system.
Looking ahead, NTPC Green is moving beyond standard solar and wind installations. The company is actively diversifying into Green Hydrogen and large-scale Energy Storage Systems to ensure that its growing renewable portfolio can provide reliable, “round-the-clock” power. As India targets 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, the 10 GW mark reached by NGEL serves as a powerful proof of concept: that large-scale, state-driven investment remains the most effective engine for meeting both economic growth and climate commitments.
