Andhra Pradesh Emerging as India's Green Energy Capital under New Leadership
April 24, 2026
Andhra Pradesh is rapidly positioning itself as a global hub for clean energy, driven by a strategic vision to balance industrial growth with environmental sustainability. Speaking at the Adria Future Summit in April 2026, Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh highlighted that the state is not just participating in the energy transition but leading it. With a massive potential of 72 GW in solar and wind energy, the government is focusing on creating an ecosystem that supports 24/7 green power, moving away from the intermittency issues that traditionally plague renewable sources.
A cornerstone of this transition is the state’s aggressive push into Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs). Lokesh emphasized that AP has identified significant potential for these “water batteries,” which allow the state to store excess solar energy generated during the day and release it during peak evening hours. This infrastructure is critical for attracting high-tech industries, such as semiconductor manufacturing and data centers, which require an uninterrupted, clean power supply to meet their global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) mandates. Beyond generation, the state is looking to capture the entire value chain of the green economy. The Minister invited global investors to look at AP for solar module manufacturing, wind turbine assembly, and battery storage production. By integrating these technologies with the state’s extensive coastline and robust logistics network, Andhra Pradesh aims to become a “Green Corridor” that services both domestic demand and international exports. This initiative is expected to generate thousands of high-skilled jobs, aligning with the government’s broader goal of fostering an innovation-led economy while contributing to India’s national target of net-zero emissions.
