News Date October 1, 2026

The Union Cabinet approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) scheme, a massive initiative designed to reinforce India’s Intra-State Transmission System (InSTS) to evacuate up to 135 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy across states and Union territories.

With a total project outlay of ₹1,86,405 crore targeted for completion by FY 2032-33, the scheme allocates ₹1,36,378 crore for InSTS development and ₹50,000 crore for 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The Central Government will contribute ₹54,082 crore to the project.

The initiative addresses grid congestion and the intermittent nature of solar and wind power by strengthening state electricity networks and introducing large-scale battery storage to absorb surplus energy and supply it during peak hours. This move supports India’s ambitious commitment to achieve 900 GW of installed non-fossil capacity by 2035 and reduce fossil fuel dependence.
