Grid Expansion and Battery Storage Hold the Key to India's Next Clean Energy Leap

India’s clean energy transition is entering a new phase where transmission infrastructure, battery energy storage and grid modernisation will become as important as renewable energy generation itself, according to industry experts speaking at the Mint Sustainability Summit 2026.
Over the past decade, India has rapidly expanded its renewable energy capacity, emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets. However, experts believe the next stage of growth will depend on how efficiently renewable electricity can be transmitted, stored and delivered to consumers.
As solar and wind capacity continue to grow, strengthening the national transmission network has become a priority. Delays in transmission infrastructure can postpone renewable energy projects and increase costs for developers, making grid expansion a key requirement for sustaining India’s renewable momentum.
Industry stakeholders highlighted that expanding transmission corridors and modernising substations will enable renewable-rich regions to supply clean electricity more efficiently across the country.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are expected to play an increasingly important role in balancing intermittent renewable generation and ensuring round-the-clock electricity supply.
Experts noted that battery storage is no longer an optional technology but a critical component of India’s future power system. Large-scale storage will help integrate higher shares of renewable energy while improving grid reliability and reducing renewable curtailment.
The Central Electricity Authority has projected substantial battery storage requirements over the coming years as renewable energy capacity continues to expand rapidly.
Speakers also emphasised the need for faster regulatory approvals, improved market mechanisms and continued policy support to accelerate investments in clean energy infrastructure.
Industry participants believe streamlined regulations, stronger transmission planning and storage-friendly policies will encourage greater private investment in renewable energy, battery storage and grid infrastructure.
India has already established one of the world’s largest renewable energy programmes. Going forward, experts say the focus must shift toward creating a more flexible, digitally managed and resilient electricity network capable of handling significantly larger volumes of renewable power.
The next phase of India’s clean energy journey will therefore depend not only on adding more solar and wind capacity but also on expanding transmission networks, energy storage systems and smart grid infrastructure to ensure reliable electricity delivery across the country.
