India Energy Milestone: India Achieves Record 6.05 GW Capacity Growth in FY26

News Date April 7, 2026

India’s wind energy sector has shattered previous records, marking a historic comeback in the financial year 2025–26. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the country added a staggering 6.05 GW of wind capacity in a single year—the highest annual addition ever recorded, surpassing the previous peak of 5.5 GW set nearly a decade ago in FY17. This represents a massive 46% increase over the capacity added in the previous year, signaling a powerful acceleration in India’s onshore wind deployment.

This surge has pushed India’s cumulative installed wind power capacity past the 56 GW milestone. The government attributes this record-breaking growth to a combination of targeted policy “unlocks” and infrastructure readiness. Key drivers included competitive tariff discovery through revamped bidding mechanisms, a graded waiver of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges, and concessional customs duties on critical turbine components. Furthermore, the rollout of a separate Wind Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) has created a guaranteed market, incentivizing utilities to integrate more wind power into their portfolios.

The geographic heart of this expansion remains in the wind-rich states of Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. A significant portion of the new capacity came from wind-solar hybrid projects, which offer a more stable power profile by combining the peak generation times of both sources. As India targets 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, this revival of the wind sector is critical. It provides the necessary “round-the-clock” balance to the country’s solar-heavy energy mix, ensuring that the transition to green energy remains both rapid and reliable.
