KPCL Achieves Historic Milestone: 15,509 Million Units of Hydropower in FY 2025-26

News Date April 11, 2026

State-owned Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) has closed the 2025-26 financial year on a historic high, generating a record-breaking 15,509 million units (MU) of hydropower. This achievement marks a significant 12% increase over the previous record of 13,853 MU set just last year. Officials attribute this success to a “perfect storm” of favorable conditions: exceptionally good rainfall across the state’s major river basins and a rigorous, data-driven approach to station maintenance. The generation spike was widespread across the state’s complex hydroelectric network. The Sharavathi Valley and Varahi Valley stations were the star performers, together contributing 8,696 MU. Notably, the Varahi Hydroelectric Project saw one of the sharpest jumps in efficiency, generating 1,599 MU—surpassing its annual target by over 50%. Even Karnataka’s legacy assets, such as the Shivanasamudra and Mahatma Gandhi Hydel Power Station at Jog Falls, delivered performances that outpaced much newer installations, proving that strategic maintenance can breathe new life into century-old infrastructure.

This record is more than just a departmental win; it is a critical pillar for Karnataka’s energy security. As the state’s electricity demand continues to climb, the ability of KPCL to maximize its 3.63 GW of installed hydro capacity reduces the need for expensive short-term power purchases from the external grid. Energy Minister K.J. George noted that this milestone solidifies Karnataka’s position as a national leader in renewable energy, demonstrating that hydropower remains the “steady heartbeat” of the grid even as more volatile solar and wind capacities are added.
