News Date July 30, 2026

Nearly 39,000 households in Jammu and Kashmir have benefited from rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, according to information provided by the Centre in the Lok Sabha. As of 24 July 2026, a total of 38,955 rooftop solar installations had been completed across the Union Territory.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said that 38,318 installations are above 3 kWp, while 387 installations fall in the 2–3 kWp category and 103 are up to 2 kWp. The figures highlight the growing adoption of rooftop solar among households in the Union Territory.

Financial support is also playing an important role in expanding rooftop solar adoption. Banks have sanctioned 29,441 loan applications worth ₹533.05 crore for rooftop solar installations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Of these, 24,308 loans worth ₹437.34 crore have already been disbursed to beneficiaries, helping households finance their rooftop solar systems.

The rooftop solar programme is also delivering direct benefits to consumers. The government said 8,673 consumers in Jammu and Kashmir have reported zero electricity bills after installing rooftop solar systems under the scheme.

Of these, 4,128 consumers are served by Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL), while 4,545 consumers are served by Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL).

The latest figures underline the growing role of distributed solar generation in Jammu and Kashmir. By enabling households to generate electricity on their own rooftops, the programme can help reduce dependence on grid electricity while supporting the wider adoption of renewable energy.

The development also reflects the broader national push to expand residential rooftop solar and increase consumer participation in India’s clean energy transition.

With financing support and rising household adoption, rooftop solar is emerging as an important component of India’s strategy to expand decentralised renewable energy and reduce electricity costs for consumers.
