NTPC’s Solar Push: Tender Floated for Transformer Packages Supporting 900 MW Capacity
May 4, 2026
NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility, has officially invited bids for a comprehensive transformer package to support the development of 900 MW of solar power projects. This tender is a critical piece of the “grid integration” puzzle, ensuring that the massive amounts of energy generated by new solar parks can be stepped up and safely injected into the National Grid. The package typically includes the supply, installation, and commissioning of power transformers, as well as associated protection and monitoring systems.
This move follows NTPC’s aggressive strategy to pivot from a thermal-heavy portfolio to becoming a dominant player in the renewable energy space. By securing the transformer infrastructure early, NTPC aims to prevent the “transmission bottlenecks” that have recently led to curtailment issues in other large-scale parks like Bhadla. The tender is expected to attract major electrical equipment manufacturers, highlighting the sustained demand for high-end power electronics in India’s expanding green energy corridors.
As India continues to break records for peak power demand—reaching 256 GW just last month—the reliability of this transformer hardware becomes paramount. Efficient transformers reduce energy losses during transmission, ensuring that every megawatt of sun harvested in rural solar zones actually reaches the homes and factories that need it. Bidders are expected to meet stringent technical and quality standards, reflecting the government’s focus on building a “future-proof” and resilient electrical architecture.
