SECI Invites CO₂ Suppliers for Green Urea and Green Methanol Projects

News Date August 6, 2026

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has invited Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from companies capable of supplying carbon dioxide (CO₂) for upcoming green urea and green methanol projects. The initiative marks another step in India’s efforts to develop a robust green hydrogen ecosystem and expand domestic production of low-carbon industrial fuels.

The EOI aims to identify reliable CO₂ suppliers that can support future projects using renewable hydrogen to manufacture green chemicals. Carbon dioxide serves as a critical feedstock in the production of both green methanol and green urea, where it combines with green hydrogen generated through renewable-powered electrolysis.

SECI is seeking suppliers capable of providing high-purity carbon dioxide from industrial sources while ensuring long-term supply reliability. The exercise is intended to create a database of potential suppliers that can participate in India’s expanding green fuels value chain.

Green methanol is increasingly being viewed as an important low-carbon fuel for the shipping, chemicals and industrial sectors, while green urea can significantly reduce emissions associated with conventional fertilizer manufacturing. Both products rely on renewable electricity, electrolyzers, hydrogen production and captured carbon dioxide to lower lifecycle emissions.

India has been accelerating investments in green hydrogen through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to establish the country as a global hub for hydrogen production, exports and downstream manufacturing. Developing domestic supply chains for carbon dioxide, renewable hydrogen and associated infrastructure is considered essential for achieving these objectives.

The latest EOI also reflects growing collaboration between renewable energy developers, industrial gas suppliers and heavy industries as India builds an integrated clean energy manufacturing ecosystem. Availability of reliable CO₂ supplies will play a key role in supporting commercial-scale deployment of green ammonia, green methanol and green urea projects over the coming years.

Industry experts believe the initiative will encourage wider participation from industrial carbon capture providers while strengthening India’s emerging market for sustainable fuels and low-carbon chemicals.
