Sterling and Wilson Secures ₹34.9 Billion EPC Contract for Coal India’s 875 MW Rajasthan Project

Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy (SWREL) has reached a significant milestone in the Indian solar sector by winning a major ₹34.9 billion contract from Coal India Limited (CIL). The company will be responsible for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of a massive 875 MW grid-connected solar project located in the Pugal Solar Park in Rajasthan. This win cements SWREL’s position as a market leader, pushing their total EPC order inflow for the current financial year (FY26) past the impressive ₹100.62 billion mark.

The project is a cornerstone of Coal India’s ambitious strategy to achieve Net-Zero status by 2028 through the installation of 3 GW of solar capacity. SWREL’s scope of work is comprehensive, covering everything from design and engineering to multi-level inspections and civil works. The contract also includes two years of dedicated Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services. To ensure high efficiency, the project must utilize solar modules and cells from the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) and maintain a minimum Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF) of 25%.

This massive project in Rajasthan, scheduled for completion within 24 months, is part of a broader trend of central public sector undertakings (CPSUs) aggressively pivoting toward clean energy. For the renewable industry, the involvement of a powerhouse like SWREL ensures that large-scale utility projects are executed with high technical standards. With a global portfolio exceeding 26.1 GW, SWREL’s expertise in handling complex, large-format solar parks will be critical in helping Coal India transition from its traditional fossil-fuel legacy into a diversified energy leader.
