Strengthening the Spine: India’s ₹9 Lakh Crore Push to Modernize the Power Grid

News Date April 20, 2026

India’s Transmission and Distribution (T&D) sector is entering a robust “supercycle,” underpinned by a massive projected investment of nearly ₹9 trillion (₹9 lakh crore) through 2032. According to a new report by Motilal Oswal Financial Services, this current investment cycle—which gained momentum in FY23—is structurally transforming the power grid. The primary catalyst is India’s aggressive renewable energy integration goals, which require a significantly more flexible and high-capacity transmission backbone to move green power from resource-rich regions to industrial hubs.

While the report notes a temporary slowdown in new project awards during FY26—dropping to 16 schemes from 45 in the previous year—it dismisses this as a “bandwidth constraint” rather than a lack of demand. Domestic manufacturers are currently prioritizing high-voltage transformers, which involve longer manufacturing and testing cycles. This high-value shift has led to record-breaking order books and improved margin profiles for industry leaders. Additionally, the rise of High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) projects—with a 32.3 GW pipeline already in motion—is creating new technical frontiers for the sector.

The growth story isn’t limited to domestic borders. Indian manufacturers are increasingly becoming “feeder factories” for global markets, filling the supply-demand gap in the US and Europe driven by aging infrastructure and data center expansion. While stock valuations in the sector are no longer considered “cheap,” the report suggests that further earnings upgrades and the unfolding export potential could sustain these levels. For the power sector, this ₹9 trillion capex push represents the essential “spine” that will support India’s transition to a decarbonized, industrial-scale economy by the next decade.
