Tamil Nadu is accelerating its focus on energy storage as the state prepares for the next phase of renewable-energy growth.

The state government has set annual energy-storage targets and aims to store the equivalent of 4% of its total renewable energy generation by 2029-30. Tamil Nadu is also targeting a total energy storage capacity of 2,500 MWh by the end of 2027.

The announcement highlights a major shift in India’s clean-energy transition.

Building more solar and wind capacity is only one part of the challenge.

The next challenge is ensuring that renewable electricity can be effectively stored, managed and delivered when it is needed.

Solar and wind generation can vary depending on weather conditions and the time of day.

As renewable-energy capacity increases, the power grid must continuously balance electricity generation and demand.

Tamil Nadu’s Energy Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar noted that integrating larger volumes of renewable power requires conventional generation to frequently ramp up and down, creating operational challenges and additional pressure on the grid.

Energy Storage Systems can help address this challenge by storing electricity when generation is high and making it available when demand increases or renewable generation falls.

Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited is developing 1,000 MWh of standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems under the State Component of the Viability Gap Funding programme.

The projects will have a combined capacity of 500 MW with two hours of storage and are planned across six TANTRANSCO substations.

The identified locations include Thennampatty, Anuppankulam, Ottapidaram, Vellalaviduthi, Kayathar and Karaikudi.

These Battery Energy Storage System projects are targeted for commissioning by December 2026.

Tamil Nadu is also developing an additional 1,500 MWh of standalone battery storage capacity.

This phase will provide 375 MW of capacity with four hours of storage and is being supported through the Power System Development Fund.

Eleven TANTRANSCO substations have been identified for these installations, with commissioning targeted by September 2027.

Together, the two programmes form the state’s planned 2,500 MWh energy-storage capacity by the end of 2027.

The importance of energy storage is growing as Tamil Nadu expands its solar and wind capacity.

Battery storage can potentially help the power system:

  • Store surplus renewable electricity
  • Manage fluctuations in solar and wind generation

Tamil Nadu’s target of storing 4% of its renewable-energy generation by 2029-30 signals the growing importance of storage in long-term energy planning.

The state’s planned 2,500 MWh of storage capacity by 2027 is also expected to provide a significant foundation for integrating larger volumes of solar and wind power into the electricity system.

For India’s clean-energy transition, the future will not be powered by renewable generation alone.
