The Land Grab: NLC India Seeks to Lease 1500 Acres in Gujarat for Mega Solar Expansion

News Date May 23, 2026

In a strategic move to aggressively expand its renewable energy portfolio, state-owned mining and power giant NLC India Limited has issued an invitation for bids to lease 1,500 acres of land in Gujarat. The public sector undertaking (PSU) isn’t looking for just any land; it has specified that the parcel must be a contiguous tract capable of hosting large-scale, utility-grade solar power projects.

This massive land search highlights a shift in how India’s largest energy developers are tackling project execution. As we’ve seen with recent tender slowdowns, the biggest bottleneck to building solar parks isn’t buying the panels—it’s securing the land and matching it to grid connectivity. NLC India’s tender explicitly mandates that the offered land must be within a specific radius of operational state transmission utility (STU) sub-stations. By locking in the land and the power evacuation path before committing to hardware, NLC is effectively “de-risking” the project from the costly delays that have plagued developers in other congested regions.

The leased land will be locked in for a long-term duration, typically 28 to 30 years, giving NLC a stable canvas to deploy advanced high-efficiency modules and tracker systems. With Gujarat aggressively positioning itself as a clean energy hub through mega-parks like Khavda, NLC’s move ensures that the Tamil Nadu-headquartered utility secures a firm, operational foothold in the highly competitive western grid corridor.
