With the ongoing conflict in West Asia and a tightening blockade of the Strait of Hormuz threatening the movement of global oil and gas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued an urgent directive to the government to fast-track India’s transition to alternative energy sources. Chairing a rigorous, three-and-a-half-hour meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Prime Minister emphasized that reducing the country’s high dependence on conventional fossil fuel imports is no longer just an environmental goal—it is a matter of immediate national security and economic resilience.

A key focus of the high-level meeting was the rapid scaling of domestic, locally sourced alternatives to directly insulate regular citizens from international supply shocks. Specifically, the Prime Minister pushed for an aggressive expansion of biogas under the GOBARdhan initiative to act as a direct substitute for imported Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cooking fuel. With national oil firms navigating unprecedented supply disruptions, the directive aims to turn localized organic waste into a reliable decentralized energy network, ensuring that geopolitical crossfire in the Gulf doesn’t translate into kitchen budget crises or fuel rationing across Indian households.

The session featured comprehensive strategy reviews from several key portfolios, including the Ministries of Power, Commerce, External Affairs, and Road Transport. Tying this emergency response to long-term planning, the Prime Minister noted that achieving ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ requires executing difficult, future-oriented structural reforms today. He instructed senior bureaucrats and ministers to ensure that these policy transitions are implemented with ease of living in mind, shifting the burden away from the public while aggressively building out a sovereign, war-proof energy mix that leverages biofuels, electric mobility, and synchronized solar infrastructure.
